[OOC] CR Chart @ [community profile] recolle

Social Links
Rank 7
Fool
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Souji Narukami
Twin number one. He found Yosuke in a trash can. Somehow that didn't tranish his impression and they've become better friends steadily over the months. He's arguably more friendly and zany than his twin, which is sometimes exhausting, and has a questionable obsession with cats. He's got the most memories of Souji, but he's not sure what that's supposed to mean. And Souji nearly walked into traffic due to sleep exhaustion and Yosuke promptly took a Critical Hit for him, like any good Magician S. Link.
Rank 9
Magician
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Keigo Higashino
Cousin Keigo! He's about 3 years older than Yosuke and the two spent a lot of time together as children when Yosuke still lived in Japan. They have a lot in common, both in interests and their way of thinking. He's arguably the easiest person for Yosuke to talk to and helped him sort out his feelings for Yu. They give each other a fair amount of shit in a loving family kind of way.
Rank 6
Priestess
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Yukiko Amagi
One of the people Yosuke graviated towards when he first moved to Recolle, and not just because she's super pretty. He has asked her out and she's definitely turned him down, but they've become pretty good friends. As long as you don't piss her off, shes a pretty cool gal. He loves her cooking and she played him a killer sax solo for his birthday! She can also now create fire, which he's a little jealous of, but he's still someone he feels like he can confide in.
Rank 4
Hierophant
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Mako Lou
A cop who jokingly threatened to arrest him online, and then Yosuke accidentally broke his outdated cellphone. Somehow from all of that shit they gave each other, they've started to become Friends. (Captial F.) Mako is a weird but cool dude and also unfairly attractive. They bounce off conspiracy theories and Mako is even teaching Yosuke how to box. But more than that he was actually worried when Yosuke got hit by that car. Mako's Adventures In Friending™
Rank 9
Lovers
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Yu Narukami
Twin number two, who also found him in a trash can. A couple classes and study sessions very quickly turned into a pretty close friendship. They bonded over their shared interest in music. Yosuke's been proud to call Yu one of his best friends, embarrassing memories and all. Yu surprised him by asking him out with a cleverly arranged playlist, so now Yosuke calls Yu his boyfriend...in private, and to a few close friends. Yu is a pretty awesome guy, Yosuke just wishes he knew how much.
Rank 5
Lovers
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Ann Takamaki
They met through bingo when Yosuke had to dial a random number and they've been hanging out ever since. Ann is, of course, absolutely gorgeous but also a really cool girl. She's easy to talk to and they've gone on multiple food adventures, most notably to McDonald's (a little inebriate) where they were asked to leave after Ann flipped out over no McFlurries. Finding out that she's a Persona user AND that she's dating Mako? Could she get more awesome? Hard to tell. But he's glad she's his friend.
Rank 1
Lovers
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Nui Harime
A little pushy, but nice. Nui and Yosuke worked together on a scanvanger hunt and he found out she's fairly perceptive, if a little more movitated by food and fun. She does like to tease him which he can take in variying levels of flustering.
Rank 2
Chariot
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
James "Bucky" Barnes
A really cool dude. Seriously. Yosuke thinks that Bucky is pretty awesome, even if he does make jokes at Yosuke's expense. His little sister isn't much differnet. But they do share conspiracy theories and have a common interest in guitar. It's definitely a "senpai please notice me" scenario except Yosuke is technically the senpai. (Setting the example as per usual.)
Rank 4
Hermit
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Futaba Isshiki
One of his online gaming bubdies turned real life buddy, who totally kicks his ass on a regular basis. Unsurprisingly, Futaba is a bit of a troll in both enviroments, and while she knows how to mess with Yosuke pretty well, he knows she's a smart girl. Nerdy but cool! Even if she did mess with him by sneaking an Alexa in his house and making it sounds like one of those horrible singing bass.
Rank 3
Fortune
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Naoto Shirogane
A smart kid from school that Yosuke hasn't put a whole ton of stock into, but seems like a decent dude. A little socially awkward, sure, but from what Yosuke can tell he hasn't exactly had it easy. Also part of the Scooby Gang, it looks like they'll be seeing a lot more of each other. Except apparently Yosuke has been in one of Naoto's memories? What's with that?
Rank 6
Strength
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Eleanor Lamb
One of the first people Yosuke really got to bond with at school--his English wasn't that great when he first moved to the states, but Eleanor was patient and nice enough to help him out, so he's arguably fond of her. Her calm demeanor is a nice balance to his exuberance. She's getting sad visions, though, so he's starting to worry...what is Retrospec trying to show her?
Rank 1
Strength
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Cleo Ritter
A girl with cat ears--no, really. That in and of itself is noteworthy, but she's been a pretty cool and chill person. She let Yosuke borrow her bike for BINGO, which actually meant that she drove it and he rode on the back. But it was still a cool experience.
Rank 1
Death
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Elizabeth Velveteen
A very strange girl who can totally kick his ass at online gaming (and maybe in person). He has a hard time following her train of thought most of the time. They did explore the Retrospec HQ building together and discovered an intern with some unfortunate preferences.
Rank 1
Tower
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Lucy Takada
A very strange high school dropout. His interactions with her have been equally strange and usually related to how weird Retrospec is being, but Yosuke is starting to suspect she's got a scary side. No--she definitely does. It's like talking to someone who should be staring in a horror movie as the monster, but look way too cute.
Rank 4
Star
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Noah Campbell
A nice and reliable guy. Yosuke had seen him around a bit before, but the Bingo event and a relationship with Souji got them talking. He's a classmate and an easy going guy, as far as Yosuke can tell. He inadverantly walked into Yosuke's sexuality crisis and actually has offered some good advice, so now he's someone that Yosuke is ready to trust.
Rank 3
Moon
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Karkat Vantas
Kind of grumpy, quiet classmate who is really just as grumpy but less quiet than Yosuke imagined. They were originally set up on a blind date for valentine's day that Yosuke refused to let be a date, but he continued to bother Karkat afterwards. It turns out that he's pretty good friends with Yu and Yosuke ended up making the assumption that they were dating. Awkward? He wasn't jealous. Nope. Not at all.
Rank 4
World
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Minako Arisato
Totally rockin' senpai from when Yosuke first moved to Recolle. They met through a community music coalition and, really, it's hard not to like Minako. Yosuke thinks she's super sweet and talented. And who wouldn't? He might idolize her a bit more than he should, but he keeps it (mostly) on the down-lo. Also her dog is cute.xt ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book.

[OOC] Application @ [community profile] recolle

PLAYER
YOUR NAME: Freya
18+?: Yes.
CONTACT: [plurk.com profile] doggystyle
CHARACTERS IN GAME: N/A

CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Yosuke Hanamura
AGE: 17
CANON: Persona 4
CANON HISTORY: Yosuke @ SMT_Wiki

Yosuke comes with a maxed Social Link with the Protagonist and is from the True End of Persona 4: The Golden. While it doesn't have the same ending variation as it does with the Protagonist, at least it means that Yosuke didn't help kill a guy in the television and was part of finding out who the real culprit behind everything was, including the salty goddess. (This also leads him to getting the worst haircut of his life.)

CANON PERSONALITY: Yosuke Hanamura is the Protagonist's second banana, first social link, and best friend. Given the fact that his Arcana is the Magician, this doesn't come as a surprise. In the Persona franchise, the Magician has become the de-facto right-hand-man and often first male social link. Yosuke is no exception, making a glorious series of first impressions where he's kicked in the nuts, crashes his bike once, and then again. It's through a sudden show of empathy or simply pity that the Protagonist helps Yosuke out of his trash can, and from that moment on you pretty much have your best friend and first party member.

Despite his unfortunate introduction, Yosuke maintains an upbeat attitude that seems to get him through his various blunders throughout the game. He's very friendly, having no problem approaching other students and peers with a smile on his face. He's arguably one of the most outspoken members of the Investigation Team, usually having some sort of comment or appraisal of any given situation or interaction, warranted or otherwise. One wouldn't call him brash, as he's not necessarily assertive, but he is open in many respects. The first thing that comes to his mind appears to be what also comes out of his mouth, making him a prime example of the foot-in-mouth syndrome. He can come off sarcastically or inadvertently (or purposefully) insulting someone. His tendency to pick on Kanji's own insecurities is such an example, although it's intended to be teasing, it can toe the line. In such instances, he's liable to get dirty looks or shunned from his friends or, if it's Chie in particular, reprimanded physically. It's played off mostly as comic relief at Yosuke's expense, though he usually deserves it. He's known to be a bit of a complainer as well, ragging on about obligations at school or at work, about what it's like living in the countryside so far away from the hustle and bustle of city life that he so loves. There's a humorous tone to it, but it's usually negative in nature.

That doesn't mean that he's just a blundering Negative Nancy, though. For all the verbal faux pas he stumbles into, Yosuke often backtracks when he realizes the impact of his words either immediately or sometime after when he's had ample time to think about it. It's not easy to admit that you're wrong, but when someone else's feelings are at stake, Yosuke does it readily. This is just one of the ways in that he is actually a very understanding and caring person. For all that he says without thinking, Yosuke is surprisingly empathetic. He often tries to imagine what someone is thinking or feeling in a given situation, especially the victims of the murder cases that they're investigating. The emotional impact of events is never lost on him. He also tends to do thoughtful things without prompting, such as taking up extra shifts at Junes to help out, his AI taking over the job as healer in battle when Yukiko isn't there or otherwise occupied, as well as letting Teddie live in his closet. We don't actually see how that conversation and convincing his parents went, but he gives up his personal space to someone else somewhat indefinitely without looking for a thank you or reason other than Teddie needed a place to stay. A sixteen going on seventeen year-old boy giving up all that personal time and space for a teammate that isn't even human? It's more often in what he doesn't say that shows just how caring Yosuke actually is.

For as talkative and expressive as he is, there are still things he keeps close to his heart. His Shadow is the first that's encountered in the game, which allows players to see how insecure he is about things from the start:

"You put on a good show of being carefree and happy-go-lucky 'cause you're so terrified of being alone." While Yosuke is a genuinely friendly person by nature, it turns out that he feels a large disconnect once he moves out to the country. He left all his friends behind, though we find out that he didn't feel much connection with them either given the fact that they almost never reach out to him once he leaves. So Yosuke's feelings of loneliness just progress when he's separated from the life that he knew, and furthermore Junes' reputation becomes his own. The town blames the introduction of the Super Store for destroying their local businesses, and not without reason. He hears it at school, in the streets, and even while he is working at Junes. Yet, despite all this, he never confronts anyone about it and continues to go on as if he hadn't heard anything. When it's personal he's a very non-confrontational person, despite the fact we see him arguing comically with his friends a lot of the time. To Yosuke, it was easier to ignore and smile with the hope that people would still talk to him than to potentially lose contact all together. Others and Yosuke himself have described him as being "too nice", showing how willing and sometimes too he is to be accommodating. It was his way of coping with being a potential social outcast. When the rest of the Investigation Team, and mostly the Protagonist, accept Yosuke regardless of his shortcomings, he learns that there will always be someone out there who you become special to just by virtue of living. It helps him accept himself.

"You just came because you thought it sounded like a good time! What else is there to do out in this shithole?" His complaints about moving out to the 'boonies', as he puts it, aren't untrue. He does hold resentment for his situation, shying away from some of the activities after school that might otherwise let him meet other people and bond with the locals. He constantly drives the point home that he's from the city and even latches onto the Protagonist right away in the hopes that, also being a transfer from the city, he will share a sense of camaraderie. However, he realizes that the Protagonist adapts to the country life right away and furthermore, Yosuke learns that, "It isn't where you are, but what you do while you're there". Once he finds meaning in what he's doing by the murder investigations as well as finally gathering a group of friends, he feels more secure and even learns to love Inaba to the point he wants to protect it and the people that live there.

"You're just trying to act like a big shot...If all went well, hey, maybe you could even be a hero!" As his Shadow points out, Yosuke's boredom of provincial life causes him to seek out something more exciting to do. Going into the TV World, playing detective, all give Yosuke the sense that he's doing something more with his life. He learns that it's not necessarily a bad thing, although his initial reasons were partly self-serving and part in due to his genuine concern about Saki's death. He realizes that the point isn't to be a hero, but to do good things.

When he accepts his Shadow, he gains his Persona, however it does not mean a full acceptance of himself. Throughout his social link, we find out that he still has trouble with things time to time, many of his worries still center around Saki Konishi. She had been the first person to really reach out to him when he arrived in Inaba and consequently the first person he really latches onto. However, he finds out after her death that her family resented her for working for the enemy store (Junes) while their family business went down. In turn, he learns that she may have just been friendly with him out of obligation, as the echoes of her consciousness said she considered him a "pain in the ass" and got "too excited" when she was nice to him. It hurt him then and continues to hurt him throughout the game, but in the end, he never blames her for it. He realizes that she was hurting and that even if she didn't actually like him, she still helped him feel welcome and related to him in a way that no one else did at the time. It would be so easy to write her off after learning how she really felt, yet Yosuke still sees her in a positive light and just wishes that she could have been happy. He wants to live his life in a way that would have made her happy. It shows remarkable strength of character and a surprising amount of understanding and forgiveness for other people, more than he really gets credit for.

He's not a terribly popular guy at school. He describes himself as "fashionable, average grades, friendly", so why wouldn't he be popular? The fact that he sometimes lacks tact may be part of it. He really does look for acknowledgment from people, not necessarily for what he does, but just that he is. Yosuke confides in the Protagonist and admits that he wanted to be acknowledged by him most of all. Yosuke admits that initially he was jealous, not only of how the Protagonist came to his power (seemingly effortlessly), his status as a leader, as well as how easily he acclimates to country life, unlike Yosuke who struggles for many months. He "thought they were the same". However, he comes to recognize that those feelings are more about him than the Protagonist, and they turn into admiration instead. He needed to get over himself. He's constantly complimenting the Protagonist's skills in battle, even his choice in clothing, and when the Protagonist does well in school (when Yosuke notably does not), he says he's "happy for him like they were his own grades". Yosuke is always the first to call the Protagonist after watching the Midnight Channel and he also tends to be the one to organize events on the Protagonist's behalf. It's maybe over-enthusiastic at times, but the two operate well together.

Throughout the course of the game, with the Protagonist being silent with few dialogue options, Yosuke often acts as the player's mouthpiece. He summarizes events, brings up new thoughts and ideas at the same pace the game progresses, as well as draw connections between clues and offer insights to different options the player may select. While this is a mechanic of the game itself to allow the player to more easily navigate the story, it also shows that Yosuke has a fairly analytical nature that might appear contrary to his more jokey stereotype. He does have a decent sense of humor, liking to make wise cracks and light jokes, keeping the tone of things light-hearted in group settings. It goes in line with his friendly disposition. However, this does not actually contradict his perceptiveness. It goes hand in hand with how he watches other people and empathizes with them, but he is able to put pieces together and draw conclusions and colorations that shows a level of more methodical thinking. Despite this, he considers himself only an average student and is often shown being worried about his grades. This is likely due to where he places importance and where he feels motivated than actual ability. Studying for his motorcycle license, for example, Yosuke readily stayed up the night before and went to take the test the next day. However, he often puts off school work and asks the Protagonist for answers in class. The investigation, in turn, is of much greater interest to him, which he works through readily. Due to this, he also acts a sort of second-in-command to the Protagonist, who says as much when he has an actual speaking role in later game installments. (Arena/Arena Ultimax and Dancing All Night.)

He does display moments of insightfulness and clarity, not just towards the case, but also towards the Protagonist and his own personal growth. He's prone to giving somewhat sappy speeches as he comes to term with his own feelings, but he's honest and in tune with them at the end of the game. Other than the Protagonist, he seems to be closest to Chie, presumably one of the first people he interacted with once coming to Inaba. Though they have a somewhat volatile relationship, they hang out a lot, tease one another, and apparently text and talk on the phone fairly often. Yukiko is more aloof, only really getting to know her through Chie and his previous attempts to ask her out. Yosuke does want to see himself as something of a ladies' man, but his attempts to be smooth and woo women generally fall flat, and sometimes literally on his face. He comes up with childish plans such as his "Up Close and Personal" plan to have girls ride on the back of their mopeds, which ended in his getting broken and having to ride on the back of Kanji's bike. Ah, well.

Yosuke tends to be on the clumsier side, as shown in how we first meet him crashing into a trash can. (An ongoing joke in the fandom.) We also see him tossing and dropping his knives in the TV World as well as comically ending up face first and ass in the air on several other occasions. Despite this, his Agility stat is actually fairly high and in Arena and Arena Ultimax, he's the fastest character in the game. His Luck stat is unsurprisingly his lowest, probably reflecting his shitty luck in personal interactions and with physics in general outside of battle. He appears to have a constant flow of energy, often tapping his foot while idling. He's also rarely seen without his trademark headphones which hang around his neck, though he puts them on in the TV World. The significance of them is not touched upon in game, but he is known to like (questionable) foreign music.

All in all, Yosuke could easily be the simple comic relief side-kick, but he's a much more complex character. His sunny disposition hides insecurities and fears of loneliness, yet he honestly wants to be helpful and do good in a world that he had learned to resent. He's both loud and tactless sometimes and understanding and empathetic at others. His reasoning skills make him a competent ally and his caring nature make him a good companion. He knows that he still has a ways to go in the path of improving himself and becoming a better person, but he knows that as long as he has friends who will accept him and go with him along the way, the journey itself will be worth it.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Agility. Yosuke has a high agility stat in comparison to most of his team and in the versus installment Persona 4 Arena, he is the fastest playable character. Light on his feet and always moving in battle, he does have good reaction time and evasive abilities. His attacks are known for being highly acrobatic, involving jumps and spins. He's still clumsy, though.

Adequate Magic Output. Though not the highest or strongest of his party members, Yosuke is arguably the most balanced character in the game. (Save his poor Luck stat.) His magic reserves start off decent and continue to be so as he levels up, making him a good back-up healer when your main magic user is disabled or out of SP (Spirit Points). His abilities are primarily wind-based, status improvements for the party or against the enemy, and healing spells.

Dual Weapons/Dual Produce. Yosuke's weapon style are fighting knives, which he's seen spinning and doing slash attacks. However, he originally started out with wrenches and you can also equip trout or corn as joke weapons. And he still uses them with deadly accuracy.

Given the name of the game, Yosuke is able to wield a Persona. At the status of his Social Link at his current canon point, Yosuke is lucky enough to have attained his Ultimate Persona Takehaya Susano-o, who looks like a dumbass.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Yosuke Hanamura
AU AGE: 16 (due to where school year falls, he's a junior when the game starts, so he'll turn 17 in June)
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: None, really. He still dyes his hair, still likes red skinny jeans. Help him.

AU HISTORY: Yosuke was born the City of Kita--one of the Northern most wards in the Tokyo prefecture of Japan--and lived there for most of his childhood. His father worked for a modest local grocery chain, while is mother quit her job as a receptionist when Yosuke was born. As an only child, he enjoyed the attention of both of his parents up through early elementary school. His father was a day-manager, so he always made it home in time for dinner. Yosuke was a bit of a mama's boy growing up and actually wanted to stay home playing with her more than making friends at school, at least at first.

Though energetic and eager, Yosuke had a difficult time finding his place at school. He tended to invite himself to play with other children without asking and tried hard to impress his peers by getting too competitive. It didn't make him very popular. Luckily, despite the four year age difference, his cousin Keigo would play with him. Yosuke pretty much thought the guy was the bee's knees. After all, not only did he have a friend, but this guy was practically a grown up being ten when he was six. LEGIT.

As he moved from kindergarten into grade school, Yosuke began to become more socially aware. He really liked having Keigo as a friend but he also kind of wanted friends he could play with at school, too. As easy as it was to compete with his classmates ("Satoshi drew the tree so if I draw one even cooler he'll talk to me"), he learned to tone it down a bit. Enough so that he didn't have to eat by himself at lunch. Making friends always seemed more important than school itself, but Yosuke still did alright.

His life, for the most part, was remarkably uneventful. That was until the local chain his father worked for got bought out by an international conglomerate. Not much happened at first, at this point his father was the store's general manager, but he quickly moved from store-side to corporate. Commutes into downtown Tokyo gave him longer days and shorter nights with the family--he didn't often make it home in time for dinner. Yosuke resented him somewhat for that, but it was a fairly common practice. He could still be a little selfish, though, couldn't he? Life resumed a new but manageable rhythm.

When he was twelve, his father got the opportunity of a life-time--the Hanamura family was moving to the United States for a minimum five-year contract so his father could work in the main corporate office in the International Relations department, heading for the Japanese and Pan-Asian market.

Cool, right?

Well, Yosuke didn't think so at first. Not that he had a lot of friends, but change could be scary. Really scary, especially for a twelve year-old. But move they did and Yosuke took some solace in the fact that he was moving to the city where Keigo talked about visiting every year. So at least he'd get to see his favorite cousin from time to time.

Recolle was a big city, so that part was familiar, but that was about it. The structure of everything was different, the roads and the people. His father still worked most of the time and his mother stayed at home. Yosuke struggled at first, his English fairly rudimentary from what he'd learned in school thus far, and learning languages wasn't something he picked up easily. The fact that he wasn't the only student in his ESL classes was a saving grace, and total immersion really helped as well. He found it difficult to make friends outside of the class initially, in no small part due to the fact he didn't want to be labeled as just "one of the ESL kids". He wanted to be part of the "everyone else" group. So while he had friends of sorts in his initial classes, he was way too focused on the other kids he deemed cool. He was a little lonely, even if it was his own doing.

Luckily, by the time he was fourteen he was more proficient than both of his parents, something he took great pride in. It helped clear the divide between himself and other students at school, too. Yosuke placed just fine in all the standard classes and actually excelled at math, despite the fact he never seemed to apply himself particularly hard. (Most kids seemed to think math was lame so he never wanted to look like he was putting any extra effort into it. If they said it was lame then he thought it was lame too.) Not wanting to come across as a stereotype or a nerd, Yosuke started trying to look more, you know, edgy.

When he first dyed his hair his mother hadn't said a word. Mostly because he did a shitty job. His father didn't notice until two days later. His mother took him to a salon to get it fixed. They told him if he wanted to keep doing that he was going to have to get a job and pay for it himself, so that's exactly what he did. His first job was working at a local aquarium store cleaning algae of the glass of tanks. Gross? Yosuke was never a big fan of fish before, but after that job, he hated them. Nothing was creepier than having a fish come up and kiss your knuckles.

When he turned fifteen, he started working at Freshens, and that's where he's been ever since. He saves up enough money to fund his newfound love of fashion as well as his first big purchase--a pair of super slick headphones. Yosuke has always liked music, but to go with the image he wanted to portray, he started buying guitars at thrift stores and pawn shops. Originally it was for looks, but he figured if he had them he should learn how to play.

Yosuke now has three guitars--one acoustic, one electric, and one electric bass guitar that he only marginally can pick around with. Glad to see that he found an extracurricular activity, his mother (with the eventual approval of his father) enrolled him in community music classes. This is where he likes to think he got into "the scene" but jamming with ten to forty year-olds isn't really the same thing. Still, Yosuke found that he actually really liked playing, although he felt that he was better at imitating other styles than coming up with anything on his own. At least it still looked cool.

Into high school Yosuke started to get better at making friends. Always eager to please, he had a tendency to agree to errands and dumb overtures for others in the hopes that they would think he was a cool and okay guy to hang out with. It didn't always work in his favor, but it rarely stopped him from trying. Keigo had visited his family during his trips to Recolle, but the best news Yosuke got was when he found out his favorite cousin was going to move there for college. Score! It would be just like old times, right? (Because being six and ten is just like being, what, sixteen and twenty, isn't it?)

Yosuke trudges his way through high school, getting average grades in most subjects--struggling in English literature and History (two things he finds not at all relevant to his life), but doing surprisingly well in math and music (two things that he doesn't realize are closely related). Though his only real musical experience has been in the community group and at school, Yosuke hopes to start a band someday. There are clubs in the area he feels like he could get into if he just knows the right people. (Yosuke never knows the right people.) What his mom doesn't know won't hurt her, right?

(It would literally break his heart to see her sad like that please don't tell his mom.)

AU PERSONALITY: Yosuke isn't drastically different from his canon counterpart. He's still friendly, try hard, work hard, a bit of a complainer, but a loyal friend. However, different circumstances have altered his growth somewhat. Instead of moving to Inaba when he was sixteen--getting stuck in a small town really bummed him out--he moved to the other side of the planet when he was still in elementary school, from one metropolis to another.

In some respects, Yosuke has gained a greater sense of freedom in the move as well as being opened to a wider range of experiences and ideas. He's always been someone with a bit of a foot-in-mouth syndrome, but the rules of being a social outcast are different. Yosuke still has a great need and desire to be someone who is liked by others, but he's finding there are multiple outlets for it. This has allowed him to be a little more open-minded and a little more creative than his canon counterpart, though it is still often squashed down with his own waffling sense of self-confidence. Being a teenager is still a wild ride.

He is less close to his parents than he was previously. In canon, Yosuke's reputation was tied to that of his family's and the business', and his desire to work hard wasn't just for a paycheck but to help out, too. He isn't tied to that now and being just one person in a city of many gives him the benefit of anonymity, as well as the struggle of every person to make a valuable impact. This has led Yosuke to try and be more stereotypically "teenage rebellious", though it doesn't usually work out in his favor. He wants to be cool but worries about getting caught. And disappointing his mom. (Not his dad, his mom. His mom is awesome.)

SAMPLE

Yosuke was having a woefully unimpressive day.

School started at the "buttcrack of dawn", as he loved to put it, and dragged on through the rest of the morning. The fact that he had a P.E. class in his second period really made it the worst. Not only were they asking him to be present at school, they were asking him to be active. What sort of sick minded person allowed any P.E. classes to take place before lunch, anyway? And why was he, an upperclassman of sorts, forced to be confined to them?

All the righteous indignation did nothing to fix the problem, though. He thought they would at least be inside due to the weather of late January, but no. Oh no. Why not run laps when it's nearly freezing outside? It'll warm the body up, they say! To be honest, Yosuke doesn't trust this infamous "they" he keeps hearing about. "THEY" could probably stand to learn a lesson or to from everyone else.

At least Yosuke can run. In fact, he's pretty fast. At one point he was even asked if he would join the track team, but he turned it down. He wanted more time after school for music and his part-time job.

It was still a time he could show off a bit, though. Yosuke didn't excel at much--well, anything, really--so when he had the opportunity to feel kind of cool, he liked to take it. As early in the morning as it was, when the teacher told everyone to start, Yosuke definitely took the chance.

He knew it's good practice to pace oneself, so he didn't want to take the lead too quickly. He wasn't known to be particularly athletic, after all. But by the time they were at the second lap to their mile Yosuke had to start strutting his stuff. He picked up the pace, passing a few of the girls in his class, although he was already mourning the view he had prior to showing off his running prowess, maybe they would be impressed enough with him to talk to him after class.

By the third lap, there were only two boys ahead of him. Ironically, both named Ryan. Ryan one was short but fast, Ryan two was tall and lanky, his long legs giving him (to Yosuke) and unfair advantage. Ryan number one couldn't hold up against Yosuke's awesome tactic of just, you know, running harder. Ryan two and his eight feet of legs would be his final opponent.

On the fourth and final lap, Ryan two and Yosuke were neck and neck. The spirit of competition seemed to have caught the other boy as well, for it was clear he wouldn't let Yosuke take the lead without a fight. In the final stretch Yosuke could feel his lungs burn with the cold air and he knew his calves were going to hate him later, but this was a matter of pride.

Out of his peripheral, he started to see Ryan two's sneakers fall back.

He was going to do it...he did it!

Yosuke threw his arms in the air with a loud, "whoop!" in victory--

--a moment too soon.

Ryan two had noticed some students pulling mats out into the middle of the football field that the track circled.

Ryan two realized that they weren't going to get them all out of the way in time.

Yosuke did not.

The upside is Yosuke's face plant was mostly onto the mat which, while painful, was better than scraping his face on the course rubber of the track.

Yosuke finished twelfth.

In the locker room, he didn't hear the end of it.

"Nice job there, Yosuke!"

"Yeah! Man, I don't think I've seen someone biff it up that hard before."

Despite his wounded pride, Yosuke laughed awkwardly along. "Hey, at least I finished, right?"

One of the boys cackled and smacked another. "Sure, you did better than Steven. But that doesn't say much!"

Despite it being early in the morning and having to run in the cold, most of the locker room was in good spirits. Yosuke's knees and the heels of his hands were covered in a rash he was already regretting, but it made a conversations piece. He took the jokes with an air of nonchalance, though he swore to himself next time he would beat Ryan two, who actually had nothing to say about the matter. He even asked Yosuke if he was okay back on the track, to which Yosuke had waved him off. Pride was more than skin after all.

Unfortunately, none of the girls talked to him after class.

But he was kind of used to that already.
